Aims:

This is a 2 day course delivered remotely on a live digital platform, which is designed to assist those on site who have responsibility for managing all forms of temporary works. It is also suitable for builders and specialized contractors, utilities, civil engineering contractors, supervisors, graduates and site engineers wishing to become Temporary Works Co-Ordinators.


Course Content:

his is an intensive/interactive two day course which involves participation of delegates in a range of workshops and tutorials. The course addresses the training element required in order to achieve competence to be a Temporary Works Co-ordinator. Aims and Objectives: • To clarify what constitutes ‘Temporary Works’ and familiarise delegates with BS5975 and the tools available to help with the process. • To allow delegates to appreciate the statutory requirements and Health and Safety roles and responsibilities relating to Temporary Works. • The course gives emphasis throughout to the importance of communication, co-ordination and competency and Risk Management: safety and business related. • To assist the Temporary Works Designers by providing the correct amount of information and sufficient time to carry out the design. • To be part of the company’s overall requirement for appointing competent Temporary Works Co-Ordinators/Supervisors, who can implement the Temporary Works procedure. • To impart basic engineering knowledge, specifically relating to construction activities. • To highlight common site Temporary Works risks and problems, so that they can be resolved and dealt with more efficiently. • Allow delegates to develop inspection skills on Temporary Works prior to loading. Full attendance of the 2 day course is essential. There is an examination at the end of the course which consists of 25 multiple choice questions. The examination is open book of 45 minutes duration. It forms the basis of assessment as to whether or not a delegate has successfully achieved a satisfactory level of understanding to be awarded the Temporary Works Co-Ordinator Training Course certificate. Those failing the examination will receive an attendance certificate Course Content: Day 1 • Importance of Temporary Works-Bragg report and update on HSE/HSA guidance. • Avoiding failure and risk management. The 3 P’s and hierarchy of control measures ERIC. • Temporary Works Procedures to BS5975:2008 and A1:2011, an internationally recognised model for managing Temporary Works. • Review of ROI HSA legislation identifying references to and interpretation of how to manage Temporary Works. • Tutorial to identify and classify temporary works • Specific Role of Temporary works co-ordinator. Concrete pressures, formwork systems, sequencing concrete works, stability, falsework, back propping, striking falsework. • Tutorial on managing designs carried out by subcontractors or equipment suppliers. • Mobile crane outrigger pads, load stability, tower crane foundations, working platforms. • Tutorial on preparing a design brief and design checking. • Setting up site and public protection. Day 2 • Understanding and classifying soils, slopes, batters, trenching, sequencing excavations and sheet piling. • Risk identification and management tutorial. • Structural alterations, demolition and refurbishment. • Tutorial on preparing a temporary works register and sequencing temporary works. • Edge Edge protection, access, mobile towers, scaffolding, TG20:13 and system scaffolding. • Milton Keynes scaffold collapse case study • Course summary, sources of further help and information and questions • Course examination and administration
